Natural debris flows and field experiments in Kazakhstan

Many new concepts of mudflow research were developed at the Kazakh Scientific Research Hydrometeorological Institute, but until now they have been available only in Russian-language publications of this institute.

In 2024, the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan, together with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, prepared the collection "Natural debris flows and field experiments in Kazakhstan", which is a translation into

English is the language of the original Russian-language scientific articles published in the collection "Mudflows", which was produced by the Kazakh Scientific Research Hydrometeorological Institute from 1976 to 1992.

The collection "Natural debris flows and field experiments in Kazakhstan" contains publications on the topics "Mudflows in the Trans-Ili Alatau", which were caused by glacial lake breakthroughs, and "Chemolgan experiments", as well as two additional articles that summarize the evolution of mudflow activity in the past and provide an overview of the main observations in during field experiments.

The Chemolgan experiments, conducted in the period from 1972 to 1978, still arouse the admiration and interest of specialists. The results of these studies are used in the development of methods for predicting mudflows and calculating their characteristics, designing mudflow protection structures and measures aimed at reducing damage caused by mudflows. The film about the Chemolgan experiments is available on our YouTube channel, which can be viewed by clicking on the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlYNHqqGjPo .

The material, which was of scientific interest to foreign specialists, can be found in the collection "Natural debris flows and field experiments in Kazakhstan".
