Alimbaeva Danara Kizatovna, General Director of RSE “Kazhydromet,” participated in the Regional Forum on Glacier and Cryosphere Monitoring in Central Asia, held in Dushanbe (Republic of Tajikistan) from May 29 to June 1, 2025. The forum brought together leading specialists, scientists, government representatives, and international organizations to discuss urgent challenges related to glacier melting and climate change in the region.

In her speech, Danara Kizatovna presented the position of the Republic of Kazakhstan on climate resilience issues and emphasized the importance of strengthening regional cooperation in cryosphere monitoring. Special attention was given to the need for systematizing climate data and expanding scientific research to adapt to changing climatic conditions. She noted that only through joint efforts is it possible to preserve glaciers as a key source of water resources in Central Asia.

During the panel discussion “Scientific Potential and Gaps in the Region,” topics on enhancing the effectiveness of national and interstate cooperation were discussed. Experts stated that for accurate forecasting and timely response to changes in the cryosphere, it is necessary not only to exchange data but also to develop joint laboratory and field research.

The forum served as an important platform for developing joint strategies for sustainable management of natural resources and minimizing the impacts of global warming. Among the priority tasks identified by the participants were the implementation of advanced remote sensing methods, unification of data collection and processing techniques, and coordination of efforts within the framework of a project to create a regional information-analytical platform.

Additionally, the event included two bilateral meetings:
A meeting between the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, E. Nysanbaev, and the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Celeste Saulo. The parties discussed WMO’s support for Kazakhstan’s initiative to hold a Regional Environmental Summit in 2026, as well as opportunities for further cooperation to develop the scientific potential of Central Asian countries. It was noted that the international evaluation of the work of Kazakhstan’s National Hydrometeorological Service, conducted by the Austrian Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in 2022, recognized it as “quite resilient.” Praise was given for the high level of staff training and Kazakhstan’s active participation in flood forecasting.

Alimbaeva Danara Kizatovna, General Director of RSE “Kazhydromet,” and Petteri Taalas, Director-General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, discussed cooperation on strengthening the capacity for hydrometeorological forecasting, supporting the implementation of the SmartMet project, introducing various modern products to improve forecast accuracy, and also developed a plan to enhance the forecasting system.

The Regional Forum confirmed that only through the combined efforts of states, scientific institutes, and international organizations can reliable glacier monitoring, timely risk warning, and sustainable management of water resources in the context of climate change be ensured.
